About this item

Moorish Idol

The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is one of the most iconic and visually stunning fish in the ocean — a species that commands attention in any aquarium with its dramatic black, white, and yellow banding and distinctive elongated dorsal fin. Instantly recognizable and widely regarded as one of the most beautiful fish in the reef hobby, the Moorish Idol is a true showpiece that brings an unmatched sense of elegance and presence to a display tank.

Found across the tropical Indo-Pacific and Eastern Atlantic, the Moorish Idol is a free-swimming, active fish that patrols open water and reef structure with graceful, deliberate movement. Its bold patterning and flowing dorsal filament make it the focal point of any system it inhabits — a fish that experienced reef keepers seek out for its rarity and visual impact. Best kept in large, established aquariums with stable water parameters and a varied, high-quality diet.

Special Considerations

The Moorish Idol is widely considered one of the most challenging fish to keep in captivity and is recommended for experienced aquarists only. It requires pristine, stable water quality and a large system with ample open swimming space. Feeding can be difficult — offer a varied diet including sponge-based foods, nori, mysis, and high-quality frozen preparations multiple times daily. Once acclimated and eating consistently it can thrive long-term, but the acclimation period demands patience and attention. Avoid housing with highly aggressive species and ensure the tank is free of copper-based medications, which are fatal to this species. Drip acclimate carefully upon arrival.
