About this item

Purple Bonsai Coralline Algae

Purple Bonsai Coralline Algae is the rarest form of coralline algae in the hobby — and one of the only places you can find it for sale anywhere online. Unlike the flat encrusting coralline most reefers know, this variety grows in stunning upright branching formations, resembling tiny underwater trees with flexible jointed segments that sway naturally with flow.

Each piece arrives as a live branching tree frag that anchors to rockwork and gradually establishes itself throughout your reef. Its deep purple to lavender coloration and organic movement make it one of the most visually striking additions possible — while also seeding your tank with live coralline spores.

Available Option

Articulated Coralline Tree Frag — 2–3"

  • Live branching fragment, approximately 2–3 inches in size
  • Ready to anchor directly onto rockwork or rubble
  • Each piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind natural structure

Special Considerations

Articulated coralline requires stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium to thrive — the same parameters needed for stony coral growth. Higher flow than encrusting coralline is recommended, as the flexible jointed structure is naturally adapted to wave-exposed environments. Avoid sudden parameter swings, as this can cause bleaching of the segments.

🌱 Propagation

Articulated coralline spreads through fragmentation and spore release:

  • Fragments naturally break off and reattach to nearby rockwork
  • Releases spores into the water column, seeding surrounding surfaces
  • Growth accelerates in stable, mature reef systems with proper calcium and alkalinity
