About this item

Foxface Rabbitfish (Algae Eater, 3-4")

The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus unimaculatus) is a bold and striking fish that earns its name immediately — a vivid yellow body contrasted by a dramatic black and white patterned face that gives the fish its unmistakable fox-like appearance. It is eye-catching, active, and genuinely useful — one of the few fish that will readily consume nuisance algae including hair algae, cyanobacteria, and bubble algae that most other fish ignore.

Hardy, adaptable, and peaceful with most tankmates, the Foxface Rabbitfish is a natural fit for reef and FOWLR systems alike. It is one of the best all-around fish a reef keeper can add — delivering standout visual presence while actively working to keep algae growth in check. A well-fed Foxface Rabbitfish is a confident, curious fish that quickly becomes one of the most watched animals in the tank.

Special Considerations

Foxface Rabbitfish possess venomous dorsal spines — handle with care during acclimation and avoid contact. The venom is not life-threatening to healthy adults but causes significant pain. The Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at large-polyp stony corals and some soft corals when underfed — provide ample algae and supplemental feeding to prevent this. It may also change color dramatically when stressed or sleeping, appearing blotchy or mottled — this is completely normal and not a sign of illness. Avoid housing with aggressive species and never use copper-based medications.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The bold black and white fox-like facial mask over a vivid yellow body makes this one of the most recognizable fish in the hobby
  • A rare combination of striking visual presence and genuine reef utility — beautiful and functional in equal measure
