Important: All size variants are juvenile specimens and will grow rapidly to 15-16 inches (38-40 cm) as adults. Long-term tank size planning must accommodate adult growth (180+ gallons standard minimum, 240+ gallons preferred for adults). Special Considerations
Species identification note: Pacific Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma velifer) is often confused with Desjardin's Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) — the Red Sea and Indian Ocean counterpart species. Pacific Sailfin displays five vertical body bands fading to a yellow tail, while Desjardin's shows finer white spotting and stronger facial striations. These are distinct species with similar care requirements but genuinely different appearance and origin.
Tank environment: Provide an established mature reef or fish-only aquarium (6+ months set up) with extensive live rock for grazing surfaces, plenty of open swimming space across the length of the tank, and moderate to strong water movement with high dissolved oxygen levels (multiple powerheads and/or protein skimming strongly recommended). Sailfin Tangs are constantly active swimmers that require substantial oxygen-rich water conditions to thrive long-term. A secure lid is advisable, especially during initial acclimation when the fish may be more skittish than usual.
Feeding requirements: Feed multiple times per day with a rotating herbivore diet built around dried nori or seaweed sheets attached to the glass with a veggie clip (essential — this is the foundation of Sailfin Tang nutrition), supplemented with high-quality marine algae-based frozen foods, herbivore preparations, and vegetable-based pellets. While Sailfin Tangs will occasionally accept meaty foods offered to other tank inhabitants, they should NOT be fed a primarily carnivorous diet — extended lack of plant-based nutrition causes lateral line erosion and long-term health decline in tangs.
Compatibility: Pacific Sailfin Tangs are semi-aggressive with other Zebrasoma tangs and similar-shape/similar-color fish, but are generally more tolerant of non-tang tankmates than many other tangs. One Sailfin per tank is the standard recommendation (multiple Sailfins are only compatible in very large tanks 300+ gallons with simultaneous introduction). Do not combine with other Zebrasoma species unless the tank is very large and both fish are introduced simultaneously. Pacific Sailfin Tangs are completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates — they serve as excellent natural algae control in reef displays. Like all tangs, Pacific Sailfins have sharp retractable caudal spines (the "scalpel") on either side of the tail base — handle with care during netting or acclimation as these spines can cause deep lacerations to human handlers and other fish. Sailfin Tangs are moderately ich-prone (like all tangs) — quarantine and observation for 2 to 4 weeks before display tank introduction is recommended, and buyers should have ich treatment protocols available if needed.
