About this item
Fire Silk Macroalgae
Fire Silk (Gracilaria sp.) is a stunning free-floating red macroalgae prized for its extraordinarily soft, silky texture and rich crimson coloration. Its long, flowing filaments drift and billow gracefully with water movement, bringing an unmatched sense of life and natural elegance to any reef aquascape.
Unlike calcified or attached macroalgae, Fire Silk grows as a loose, free-floating mass that does not anchor to rock or substrate. This makes placement critical — in display tanks it can be placed in low-flow zones creating a beautiful red canopy appearance or contained in refugium baskets where it can drift freely without being scattered across the tank by strong currents.

Special Considerations
Fire Silk is a free-floating macroalgae — it does not attach to rock, sand, or any substrate. Because of this, it must be kept in low-flow areas of the display tank or inside a refugium basket to prevent it from being pulled into pumps or scattered by strong currents. A refugium basket is the most reliable option for long-term success, allowing the algae to tumble gently while staying contained and well-lit.
🌱 Propagation
Fire Silk spreads naturally through branching growth and fragmentation:
- Filaments extend and branch outward as the colony grows
- Clumps can be divided by hand into smaller portions without harming the plant
- Separated fragments readily establish into new colonies under suitable conditions
