About this item

Red Grape Bubble Macroalgae

Red Grape Bubble Macroalgae (Botryocladia occidentalis) is a striking ornamental red macroalgae recognized for its clusters of smooth grape-like vesicles that form along branching stems. Its deep red to burgundy coloration creates dramatic contrast against live rock, sandbeds, and surrounding green macroalgae species.

Unlike runner-forming macroalgae such as Caulerpa, Botryocladia develops upright branching stems that support round vesicles resembling miniature grapes. These vesicles are fluid-filled structures that give the algae its distinctive texture and reef-like appearance in marine aquascapes.

Special Considerations

Red Grape Bubble Macroalgae (Botryocladia occidentalis) forms delicate branching stems with fluid-filled vesicles. While generally stable in reef aquariums, the vesicles can occasionally detach if handled roughly or exposed to strong grazing pressure. Stable lighting and moderate water movement support the healthiest growth.

🌱 Propagation

Botryocladia primarily spreads through fragmentation and branch growth:

  • Detached branches may reattach to rock surfaces
  • New vesicle clusters develop along branching stems
  • Colonies expand gradually as branches divide
