About this item

Mixed Filament Green Macroalgae (Hair Algae, Bryopsis)

Mixed Filament Green Macroalgae includes several species commonly referred to as hair algae or bryopsis, forming fine, feather or grass-like strands that create soft, flowing green clusters. In natural reef environments, this algae grows as small tufts across rock and sand surfaces, providing microhabitats for copepods, amphipods, and other reef microorganisms.

Its extremely fine and flexible structure gives it a soft, hair-like appearance underwater. When maintained intentionally in refugiums or macroalgae systems, it functions as a high-efficiency nutrient absorber while also serving as a natural grazing source for herbivorous fish and invertebrates.

Special Considerations

This macroalgae is recommended for experienced aquarists who intentionally cultivate filamentous algae for biodiversity, nutrient export, or herbivore feeding. Bryopsis-type algae can grow rapidly and may spread beyond intended areas if introduced into display rock structures. It is best maintained in controlled refugium environments or dedicated macroalgae systems by hobbyists who understand and intend to utilize its growth characteristics.

🌱 Propagation

Filamentous macroalgae spreads through fragmentation and vegetative growth:

  • Small fragments may attach and grow into new clusters
  • Existing strands naturally branch and expand
  • Growth rate increases with higher nutrients and lighting
