About this item

Angel Hair Macroalgae

Angel Hair Macroalgae (Gracilaria sp.) is a visually dramatic and uniquely structured red macroalgae that earns its name the moment you see it in flow. Long, smooth, cord-like strands in a vivid crimson red extend upward and outward from a central base, swaying and drifting independently with every pulse of current in a way that looks more like a living sea anemone than a plant. The effect in a display tank is immediately striking — a bold, warm-red focal point that adds movement, color, and life to any aquascape.

Sourced from Australian waters and rarely seen in the hobby, Angel Hair is a genuine collector's specimen that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as something extraordinary. Unlike branching or feathery red macroalgae, the smooth, individual strand structure is completely unique — each cord flowing independently and catching the light with a clean, almost translucent quality that rewards every viewing angle.

Special Considerations

Angel Hair displays best when mounted to rockwork in a position that allows the long strands to extend freely into open water with gentle flow moving around them. Avoid strong direct flow which will tangle and compress the strands rather than allowing them to sway individually. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins, large tangs, and puffers which will readily graze the strands. Supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule to maintain rich crimson coloration. Handle gently during placement and acclimate slowly on arrival.

🌱 Propagation

Angel Hair spreads naturally through strand growth and fragmentation:

  • Individual strands extend and branch outward as the colony grows
  • Clumps can be divided by hand into smaller portions without harming the plant
  • Separated fragments readily establish into new colonies under suitable conditions
