About this item

Cherry Bubble Tree Macroalgae

Cherry Bubble Tree Macroalgae (Lomentaria sp.) is one of the most structurally fascinating and visually unique macroalgae available in the reef hobby. This rare Australian species grows in a way unlike virtually anything else you can keep — long, whip-like branches built entirely from inflated, hollow, balloon-like segments that fork and branch repeatedly into an elegant tree-like form. From a distance it reads as a delicate, wispy crimson tree swaying in the current. Up close, every branch reveals its extraordinary segmented structure — each hollow tube connecting seamlessly to the next, the whole plant a living architectural wonder in deep cherry red.

In flow the Cherry Bubble Tree comes fully alive. The long segmented branches sway and flex independently, catching the current and releasing it with a fluid, almost hypnotic movement that no flat-bladed or round-vesicle macroalgae can replicate. Under blue and actinic lighting the deep cherry red intensifies and the hollow segments take on a subtle translucent quality — glowing faintly from within and adding a richness of color that rewards every viewing angle.

Sourced exclusively from Australian waters and almost impossible to find in the hobby, Cherry Bubble Tree is a genuine collector's specimen — one that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as something extraordinary, and that newcomers will simply not be able to stop looking at.

Care Information

💡 Lighting
Low to Moderate — deep red coloration maintained best away from intense direct light
🌊 Water Flow
Low to Moderate — gentle indirect flow brings out the best movement
📍 Placement
Rock-mounted — mid to lower display zones with open water around it
⚙️ Care Level
Moderate — stable parameters and consistent nutrients recommended
📈 Growth Rate
Moderate — steady and non-invasive
🧪 Nutrient Export
Moderate nitrate and phosphate uptake

Special Considerations

Cherry Bubble Tree performs best in stable, established systems with gentle indirect flow that allows the branching structure to sway freely without being battered. The hollow segmented branches are delicate — avoid strong direct flow which can stress or damage the branch tips over time. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins, large tangs, and puffers which will readily graze the inflated segments. Supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule to maintain rich cherry red coloration. Handle gently during placement — the hollow segments can be damaged by rough handling.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The combination of inflated hollow segments and tree-like branching is completely unique in the macroalgae hobby — nothing else grows quite like this
  • An exceptional copepod refuge — the hollow segmented branches provide extraordinary surface area and shelter for beneficial microfauna throughout the entire structure
  • A rare Australian collector's specimen that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as extraordinary — and that no serious macro display should be without
