About this item

Dwarf Cuttlefish (Sub-Adult 2–3")

The Dwarf Cuttlefish (Sepia bandensis) is one of the most extraordinary and bucket-list-worthy animals in the entire saltwater hobby. This is a true cephalopod — intelligent, color-shifting, hovering through the water column with hypnotic fin undulations and the unmistakable W-shaped pupils that make eye contact with you across the room. Few animals in any aquarium command attention the way a Dwarf Cuttlefish does. Watch one flash communication colors across its skin in real time, ambush prey with a lightning-fast tentacle strike, or rest motionless on the substrate disguised as a piece of rubble — every observation is a moment with one of the ocean's most remarkable creatures.

Dwarf Cuttlefish are the only commonly available cuttlefish species small enough for a home aquarium, staying around 4 to 5 inches at full size and well-suited to dedicated species tanks in the 30 to 50 gallon range. Our specimens are sold as sub-adults at 2–3", a size that allows you to enjoy the full personality and behavioral repertoire of the species while watching them mature in your own system. Sub-adults at this size are eating well, display the full color-change capabilities of the species, and are robust enough to settle confidently into a properly prepared system.

Keeping a Dwarf Cuttlefish is unlike keeping any fish, invertebrate, or coral. It is a specialist commitment — a dedicated species tank, live food, and a willingness to learn the husbandry — but the reward is unmatched in the hobby. For reefers who have done it all and are ready for something that no fish display can offer, the Dwarf Cuttlefish delivers an experience that genuinely cannot be replicated. This is the kind of animal you build a tank around.

⚙️ Care Level

Special Considerations

Dwarf Cuttlefish require a dedicated species-only tank with no fish, no shrimp other than as food, and no aggressive invertebrates — they are both predators and prey-sensitive, and cannot be safely housed with most reef livestock. They strongly prefer live food, particularly live mysis or ghost shrimp; some specimens can be trained to accept frozen mysis over time but live food should be assumed as the default. Cuttlefish can release ink when stressed, so a strong protein skimmer and the ability to run activated carbon are essential for emergency clearing. Cover all powerhead and pump intakes before introduction, as cephalopods can be drawn into uncovered equipment with fatal results. Avoid copper-based medications entirely — copper is fatal to cephalopods even in trace amounts. Drip acclimate slowly over 60 to 90 minutes to match parameters precisely. Provide low-flow areas, soft substrate, and minimal sharp rockwork to prevent injury during jetting.

Livestock Disclaimer

Due to natural variation, the Dwarf Cuttlefish you receive may vary slightly in coloration, pattern, and size within the stated 2–3" sub-adult range. Color expression shifts naturally and rapidly throughout the day as part of normal cephalopod behavior.

Photographs are representative examples. Individual specimens may display differences in pattern, behavior, and appearance depending on lighting, mood, and tank conditions.

As with all live animals, proper acclimation and a suitable, established environment are essential for best results. Dwarf Cuttlefish require a dedicated species-only setup prepared in advance — please ensure your system is fully ready before purchase.
