About this item

Falco Hawkfish

The Falco Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco) is one of the most personality-heavy, endlessly watchable, and characterful small reef fish available in the entire saltwater hobby. A pale white body accented with warm red-orange saddle blotches along the back, distinctive red facial markings, and a signature tufted dorsal fin gives the Falco Hawkfish its bold, expressive appearance — every specimen a genuine individual with its own personality, favorite perching spots, and hunting behaviors that turn any reef display into a dynamic living scene. Also known as the Dwarf or Coral Hawkfish, Falco is one of the smallest hawkfish species available and one of the most rewarding for reef keepers looking for a small fish with serious character.

What makes the Falco Hawkfish one of the most rewarding small reef fish in the hobby is the combination of striking coloration, dynamic perching-and-hunting behavior, and genuine personality. Falco Hawkfish are perching predators — sitting alert on rockwork and coral outcrops watching for prey to swim by, then striking with remarkable speed — one of the most active and engaging small reef fish available, and one of the few that will recognize the owner and interact with the tank environment during feeding. Hardy, adaptable, and completely reef-safe with corals, the Falco Hawkfish is one of the easier hawkfish species to keep and an excellent choice for reefers looking for a small fish with genuine display presence and personality.

Special Considerations

Falco Hawkfish are reef-safe with corals but will actively hunt and consume small ornamental shrimp (sexy shrimp, small peppermint shrimp), small fish and fry, and beneficial microfauna including copepods and amphipods — plan the community carefully around this predatory behavior. Larger established cleaner shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, and fish larger than the Falco's mouth are generally safe. Provide plenty of rockwork with perching ledges and outcrops for the hawkfish to survey the display — Falco Hawkfish spend most of their time perched rather than swimming continuously, and adequate perching structure is essential for natural behavior. Falco Hawkfish are peaceful with larger tankmates but can bicker with other same-species Falcos in smaller tanks; keep only one Falco per system unless the tank is 75 gallons or larger with abundant rockwork. Feed a varied carnivore diet 1 to 2 times daily; Falco Hawkfish are enthusiastic feeders and rarely refuse food. Cover open-top tanks with a mesh screen — Falco Hawkfish are strong short-burst swimmers and can jump if startled or during aggressive feeding.
