About this item

Flying Flame Scallop

The Flying Flame Scallop (Limaria sp.) is one of the most extraordinary and rarely available invertebrates in the saltwater hobby — an Indo-Pacific file clam that earns its name the moment it enters your tank. When threatened or exploring, it launches itself through the water by rapidly clapping its shell valves together, propelling itself in swift, darting bursts that no other clam or scallop can match. Between flights it fans out an extraordinary crown of long, flowing, reddish-orange tentacles that extend far beyond the shell in every direction — creating a display that looks more like a living sea anemone than a bivalve.

Those tentacles are the Flying Flame Scallop's most defining and captivating feature. Delicate, silky, and extraordinarily long relative to the shell, they sway and drift continuously in the current — touching, sensing, and sticking lightly to whatever they contact as a natural defense mechanism. They are completely harmless to handle, producing a gentle adhesive quality without any sting or toxin — just pure alien elegance. Under reef lighting the reddish-orange coloration glows warmly and the tentacle spread creates a constant, hypnotic movement that draws attention from across the room.

Sourced from Indonesian waters and virtually unseen in the US hobby market, the Flying Flame Scallop is a genuinely exotic specimen — the kind of animal that experienced reef keepers do a double take on, and newcomers simply cannot stop watching.

Special Considerations

The Flying Flame Scallop is a filter feeder that requires regular supplemental feeding to thrive long term — this is the most critical factor in its care. Target feed with high quality phytoplankton, marine snow, or liquid plankton products directly to the animal several times per week using a pipette or turkey baster. It prefers low flow, dimly lit areas where it can settle and feed without being disturbed — the back of the tank, under rock overhangs, or in sheltered crevices are ideal. Avoid housing with aggressive fish, large wrasses, or any predatory invertebrates that may nip at the delicate tentacles. Never expose to copper-based medications. Always drip acclimate slowly and handle with care — the tentacles are delicate.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The tentacles produce a gentle natural adhesive — completely harmless to touch, but effective enough to stick lightly to fingers, glass, and rockwork as a natural defense mechanism
  • One of the only bivalves in the hobby that actively swims — the jet-propelled darting flight through the water column is genuinely startling and spectacular to witness
  • Virtually unavailable in the US hobby market — sourced directly from Indonesian waters, this is one of the most exotic and conversation-starting invertebrates you can place in a reef display

Livestock Disclaimer

Due to natural variation, the specimen you receive may vary in shell size, tentacle length, and coloration. Photographs are representative examples.

As a filter feeder, the Flying Flame Scallop requires dedicated supplemental feeding and an established, mature reef system to thrive long term. It is recommended for experienced reef keepers only.

As with all live animals, proper drip acclimation and a stable, established environment are essential for best results.
