About this item

Hector's Goby

Hector's Goby (Koumansetta hectori) is one of the most refined, distinctively patterned, and endlessly watchable small reef gobies available in the entire saltwater hobby. A sleek elongated body wears an unmistakable pattern of thin alternating black and bright yellow horizontal pinstripes running from head to tail, topped by a vivid yellow face and accented with two contrasting dark eyespots — one on the dorsal fin and one near the base of the tail — creating one of the sharpest, most graphic small-fish silhouettes in the entire reef trade. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs from the Red Sea through East Africa, Hector's Goby brings a genuinely refined and geometric aesthetic to any reef display, moving through the water with a smooth hovering motion completely unlike sand-sifting gobies.

What makes Hector's Goby one of the most rewarding small reef fish is the combination of striking pinstripe coloration, hovering-and-perching behavior, and peaceful reef-safe temperament. Hector's Gobies hover just above the substrate and perch alertly on rockwork, watching the display with the poised confidence of a much larger fish — one of the most graphic and photogenic small reef fish available for reef keepers building peaceful community displays. Hardy, adaptable, and completely reef-safe with corals and larger invertebrates, Hector's Goby adapts to a wide range of reef parameters and eats readily from day one. For reef keepers looking for a small fish with sharp visual identity and easy care, Hector's Goby is one of the best refined display gobies in the hobby.

Special Considerations

Hector's Gobies are peaceful, reef-safe, and completely non-aggressive to corals and larger invertebrates, though like most small gobies they will consume beneficial copepods and amphipods from the live rock and sandbed. Provide rockwork with perching ledges and open substrate area — Hector's Gobies spend their time hovering just above the substrate and perching alertly on rockwork rather than sifting sand aggressively like Diamond or Sleeper gobies. Hector's Gobies are peaceful with tankmates including other Hector's specimens, and pairs or small groups can be kept together in tanks of 30 gallons or larger. Hector's Gobies are hardy Indo-Pacific reef fish that adapt well to a wide range of reef parameters and eat readily; feed a varied carnivore diet 1 to 2 times daily. Newly introduced specimens can be shy for the first few days but typically settle in and become active hovering displays within a week. Cover open-top tanks with a mesh screen — like most gobies, Hector's can jump if startled. Adult size approximately 2.5 to 3 inches.
