About this item

Candy Cane Coral

Note: This is a general description of the species — the specific specimen you receive may vary in color, size, and appearance.

The Candy Cane Coral (Caulastrea furcata) is one of the most beloved, beginner-friendly, and endlessly rewarding LPS corals in the entire saltwater hobby. Fleshy plump polyps sit atop tubular calcified stalks that branch like miniature tree branches, with each polyp displaying striped or bullseye patterns across the fleshy tissue that give this coral its "candy cane" name — glowing across green, blue, brown, yellow, red, or purple morphs, with each polyp centered by a distinctive contrasting mouth (commonly neon green, though red, blue, purple, and other mouth colors also occur across different morphs) that fluoresces dramatically under actinic reef lighting — creating one of the most instantly recognizable and photogenic LPS silhouettes in the entire reef trade. Also known as Trumpet Coral or Bullseye Coral, the Candy Cane is native to Indo-Pacific reefs including Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Coral Sea, and remains one of the most popular introductory LPS corals in the hobby.

What makes the Candy Cane Coral one of the most rewarding beginner-friendly LPS additions to any reef is the combination of dramatic branching growth, easy care, and dynamic tree-like colony development. Candy Cane Corals grow quickly under stable conditions, with each polyp splitting and branching over time into new heads that transform a single frag into a full tree-like colony — with proper conditions and consistent feeding, a single 1 or 2 head starter piece can realistically develop into 20 or more polyps within a year, and the skeletal branches themselves create an increasingly dramatic sculptural presence on the reef. Peaceful with tankmates, forgiving of typical reef parameters, and one of the most photogenic LPS corals under blue and actinic lighting, the Candy Cane Coral is one of the best all-around beginner LPS corals for reefers building a color-focused collection or exploring their first stony coral.

Care Information

Lighting Low to Moderate (PAR 100–150)
Water Flow Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow preferred
Placement Mid to lower rockwork or sandbed
Care Level Easy — beginner-friendly LPS
Temperament Peaceful to semi-aggressive — provide 3-4" spacing from other corals
Feeding Photosynthetic — benefits from meaty foods 1-2x per week

Special Considerations

Candy Cane Corals are peaceful to semi-aggressive with occasional stinging tentacles — provide 3 to 4 inches of spacing from other coral species in all directions to allow polyp expansion and prevent contact damage. Provide gentle, indirect flow to allow full polyp expansion; direct high-velocity flow will prevent the fleshy polyps from opening fully. Feed occasionally with small pieces of mysis, coral feeding preparations, or other meaty foods 1 to 2 times per week to accelerate growth and enhance color saturation — Candy Canes derive most of their nutrition from photosynthesis but respond dramatically to target feeding, with growth rates reaching one new polyp per month or faster under optimal conditions. Candy Cane color expression benefits significantly from quality reef lighting with strong blue and actinic spectrum coverage — under-lit specimens may appear more muted, while properly lit specimens display full saturated color and dramatic fluorescence, particularly around the contrasting polyp mouth coloration. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium (above 400 ppm), and magnesium levels to support skeletal growth and consistent coloration. Candy Cane Corals are one of the hardiest LPS corals in the hobby and forgive typical parameter fluctuations, making them an excellent choice for beginner and intermediate reefers building their first LPS collection.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

The Candy Cane Coral is one of the most beginner-friendly and universally appealing LPS corals available to reef keepers:

  • Fleshy striped or bullseye polyps with contrasting mouth colors — one of the most photogenic LPS silhouettes in the hobby
  • Fast tree-like branching growth — single frags can develop into dramatic colonies of 20 or more polyps within a year under optimal conditions
  • A hardy, beginner-friendly LPS with striking fluorescence under actinic lighting and dynamic growth potential — one of the best introductory stony corals for any mixed reef display
