About this item

Puffball Pom Pom Macroalgae

Puffball Pom Pom Macroalgae

Puffball Pom Pom Macroalgae (Sporochnus sp.) is one of the most extraordinary and unusual macroalgae you will ever encounter in the reef hobby. Native to Australian waters and almost never seen in captivity, this remarkable brown macroalgae grows dark, wiry upright stems tipped with perfectly round, fluffy pom-pom like tufts at every branch tip — giving it an appearance so unusual and otherworldly that it stops everyone who sees it in their tracks. There is genuinely nothing else in the saltwater hobby that looks remotely like it.

Each individual stem branches upward and outward, terminating in a dense, soft, spherical cluster of fine filaments — like a living bouquet of tiny puffballs suspended in motion. Under reef lighting and in flow, the pom-pom tufts sway and billow gently, creating an almost hypnotic effect that is unlike any other macroalgae in the display tank.

As a rare brown macroalgae sourced from Australian waters, Puffball Pom Pom is a genuine collector's specimen that most hobbyists worldwide have never had the opportunity to keep. Beyond its extraordinary visual impact, the dense fuzzy tufts provide exceptional surface area for beneficial copepods, amphipods, and microfauna — making it as functional as it is spectacular.

Special Considerations

As an extremely rare species with virtually no documented aquarium history, Puffball Pom Pom benefits from stable, established systems with consistent water parameters. Avoid strong direct flow which can damage the delicate pom-pom tufts at the branch tips. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins and large tangs. As with all brown macroalgae, supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule. Acclimate carefully on arrival — this species has not been extensively documented in captivity and patience during establishment is recommended.
