About this item

Saltwater Silver Spotted Scat

The Silver Spotted Scat (Scatophagus argus) is not just a fish — it is one of the most powerful and versatile natural pest controllers available in the saltwater hobby. With its striking white body covered in bold dark spots and a bold, active personality, this species earns a permanent place in any system as a hardworking super cleanup crew member that takes on the pests most fish simply refuse to touch.

While typical CUC members each tackle one problem, the Silver Spotted Scat tackles four:

🪸
Aiptasia
One of the only fish with a genuine, documented appetite for Aiptasia — goes straight to work where chemicals and other solutions fall short.
🌿
Nuisance Algae
A non-stop grazer that keeps rockwork, glass, and sandbed free of the algae buildup that plagues even well-maintained systems.
🔴
Cyanobacteria
Actively consumes red slime — one of the most frustrating and persistent problems in reef systems that the vast majority of fish ignore entirely.
🐛
Flatworms, Bristleworms & Soft-Bodied Pests
An opportunistic hunter that picks off flatworms, bristleworms, and other soft-bodied pests — a natural exterminator working around the clock.

It is a robust, exceptionally hardy fish that thrives in full saltwater environments and has a well-earned reputation for long-term resilience. This is not a fish you replace every year — hobbyists keep them for years, and the pest control never stops.

Special Considerations

Silver Spotted Scats are active, growing fish that do best with space to roam. They are generally compatible with most reef and FOWLR tankmates but can be assertive at feeding time. Supplement their diet with high-quality prepared foods once Aiptasia and algae supplies diminish. They are not considered reef safe with small ornamental invertebrates and should be kept with this in mind in mixed systems.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

The Silver Spotted Scat is the closest thing to an all-in-one pest solution in the saltwater hobby:

  • Four distinct pest and nuisance problems solved by a single fish — no other species comes close
  • Exceptionally hardy and long-lived — a fish that earns its keep every single day
  • A true Super CUC fish — set it loose and let it work
