About this item

Chalk Bass

The Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum) is one of the most graceful, hardy, and endlessly watchable small reef fish available in the entire saltwater hobby. A soft chalky pale blue body accented with several vertical dark bars along the sides and warm golden-yellow highlights on the face and fins gives the Chalk Bass its distinctive, refined coloration — subtle yet striking, and completely unlike the bold neon colors of most reef fish. Native to Caribbean reefs including the Dry Tortugas and Florida Keys, the Chalk Bass brings a genuine slice of Caribbean elegance to any reef display, moving through the water column with the smooth, deliberate confidence of a miniature sea bass.

What makes the Chalk Bass one of the most rewarding small reef fish is the combination of striking coloration, active swimming behavior, and genuine shoaling potential. Chalk Bass are one of the few small reef fish that can be kept in groups of 3, 5, or more, displaying natural schooling behavior and dramatically more active swimming than solitary specimens — one of the best shoaling fish available for reef keepers building a mid-water community display. Hardy, peaceful with tankmates, and completely reef-safe with corals, the Chalk Bass adapts to a wide range of reef parameters and eats readily from day one. For reef keepers looking for a Caribbean-native fish with genuine display presence and easy care, the Chalk Bass is one of the best small reef fish available in the hobby.

Special Considerations

Chalk Bass are reef-safe with corals but will actively hunt and consume small ornamental shrimp (sexy shrimp, small peppermint shrimp), small fish and fry, and beneficial microfauna including copepods and amphipods — plan the community carefully around this predatory behavior. Larger cleaner shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, and fish larger than the Chalk Bass's mouth are safe. Chalk Bass are one of the best small reef fish for shoaling behavior — groups of 3, 5, or more display dramatically more natural swimming activity than solitary specimens, and all Chalk Bass are simultaneous hermaphrodites so pairs and groups can be added without concern for sex ratio. Provide plenty of open swimming space plus rockwork with caves and crevices for shelter. Chalk Bass are hardy Caribbean natives that adapt well to a wide range of reef parameters, but stable water quality supports the best long-term health and coloration. Feed a varied carnivore diet 1 to 2 times daily; Chalk Bass are enthusiastic feeders and rarely refuse food. Cover open-top tanks with a mesh screen — Chalk Bass are strong swimmers and can occasionally jump if startled.
