About this item

Bubble Tip Anemone

Note: This is a general description of the species — the specific specimen you receive may vary in color, size, and appearance.

The Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is the single most popular and beloved anemone in the entire saltwater hobby. A living crown of thick, flowing tentacles — often tipped with the signature inflated "bubble" ends that give this species its name — glows across the rockwork in an extraordinary range of colors from rose and rainbow to gold, green, orange, purple, and chocolate, with every specimen bringing its own unique color signature to the display. The classic BTA silhouette has defined reef aquascaping for decades, and for good reason: few animals combine mass visual appeal, genuine hardiness, and iconic hosting behavior the way the Bubble Tip does.

What makes the Bubble Tip Anemone the go-to centerpiece for so many reef displays is its combination of accessibility and iconic clownfish-hosting relationships. BTAs host the widest range of clownfish species of any anemone in the hobby — including Ocellaris, Percula, Maroon, Cinnamon, Tomato, and Skunk Clownfish — making them the definitive choice for anyone building the classic clownfish-and-anemone symbiosis at the heart of their reef. Under stable conditions BTAs also reproduce asexually by splitting, meaning a single specimen can grow over time into a full colony of daughter anemones. Hardy, adaptable, and forgiving of typical reef parameters, the Bubble Tip is one of the best all-around anemones for new and experienced reefers alike.

Special Considerations

The signature bubble-tip appearance is condition-dependent and can come and go based on lighting, flow, feeding, and overall tank conditions. A healthy BTA may display fully inflated bubble tips at one point and long, stringy tentacles at another — both are normal presentations of the same anemone. Buyers should expect natural variation in tentacle shape over time. Bubble Tip Anemones may roam the aquarium until they find their preferred location, typically anchoring their foot in a rock crevice; some individuals continue to wander occasionally throughout their lives. Provide multiple potential attachment points with crevices in the rockwork. BTAs have a moderate sting that can catch small fish, shrimp, and small invertebrates that swim into contact — plan tankmate stocking accordingly. Cover powerhead and pump intakes before introduction, as wandering anemones can be drawn into unprotected pumps. Feed weekly with meaty foods to support growth, color, and splitting behavior. Under stable conditions BTAs reproduce asexually by splitting, gradually building a colony from a single specimen over months and years.
