About this item

Berghia Nudibranch

If Aiptasia has taken hold in your reef, Berghia Nudibranch (Berghia stephanieae) is the most targeted, effective, and reef-safe solution available. These specialized predators eat one thing and one thing only — Aiptasia anemones — masking them a precision tool that eliminates the pest without touching your corals, fish, or other invertebrates. No chemicals, no risk, no collateral damage.

Aiptasia is one of the most frustrating and persistent problems in the reef hobby. Left unchecked, a handful of polyps can multiply into hundreds, stinging and overwhelming corals and consuming valuable real estate in your system. Berghia work quietly and methodically — hunting Aiptasia at night, consuming them completely, and even taking out the foot to prevent regrowth. Given enough time and the right numbers, they will clear an entire system.

We offer Berghia in two sizes to match your situation. Medium nudibranchs are ideal for systems with smaller or more scattered Aiptasia, or for building up a reproducing population over time. XL nudibranchs are the heavy hitters — larger, more experienced hunters best suited for established infestations and faster results. For best outcomes, we always recommend introducing multiple individuals, as Berghia are more effective — and will reproduce — when kept in groups.

Should you decide to grow your own berghia, you can also purchase additional Aiptasia Here.

Available Options

Medium Berghia Nudibranch (<0.5")

  • Younger, smaller individuals — ideal for light to moderate Aiptasia pressure
  • Will grow, mature, and begin reproducing in your system over time
  • Best introduced in groups of 4–6+ for faster, more reliable results

XL Berghia Nudibranch (~0.75–1")

  • Fully mature, large adults — ready to hunt immediately upon introduction
  • Best choice for established or heavy Aiptasia infestations
  • Larger size means faster consumption and greater impact from the start

How Many Do I Need?

🐚 Small Tank (<50 gal)
Start with 2–6 Berghia — supplement with XL for faster results
🐚 Medium Tank (50–150 gal)
6–10 recommended — mix of Medium and XL works well
🐚 Large Tank (150+ gal)
10–20+ depending on infestation severity — go heavier with XL
⚠️ Heavy Infestation
Always order more than you think you need — Berghia are consumed in the process and attrition is normal

⚙️ Reef Safe
100% — will not harm any other tank inhabitants
🍽️ Diet
Aiptasia only — will not accept any substitute food source
🔍 Predators
Keep away from wrasses, peppermint shrimp, and known nudibranch predators

Special Considerations

Berghia are specialized predators that will starve once all Aiptasia in the system has been eliminated. This is expected and is a sign of success — plan accordingly by ordering enough individuals to clear the infestation before this occurs, or consider rehoming any survivors to a tank that still has Aiptasia. Always drip acclimate Berghia slowly on arrival — they are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature. Avoid housing with known predators including wrasses, peppermint shrimp, and aggressive fish.

🔍 Why Berghia?

Berghia are the gold standard for Aiptasia control in the reef hobby:

  • The only solution that eliminates Aiptasia completely — including the foot — preventing regrowth
  • 100% reef safe, chemical free, and natural — no risk to corals, fish, or water chemistry
  • Will reproduce in your system, meaning a small initial group can grow into a self-sustaining cleanup crew

Livestock Disclaimer

Due to natural variation, the Berghia you receive may vary slightly in size and coloration. Size ranges are approximate.

Results will vary depending on the size of the infestation, tank conditions, and the presence of predators. We recommend introducing multiple individuals for best outcomes.

As with all live animals, we cannot guarantee specific outcomes. Proper acclimation and a predator-free environment are essential for success.
