About this item

Yuma Mushroom Coral

Note: This is a general description of the species — the specific specimen you receive may vary in color, size, and appearance.

The Yuma Mushroom (Ricordea yuma) is one of the most coveted, visually dramatic, and endlessly variable mushroom corals in the entire saltwater hobby. A large, bubbled disc covered in raised beaded vesicles glows across some of the most vivid colors in the reef trade — electric rainbow, orange-and-blue two-tones, red with green centers, purple with contrasting bubble tips, and countless multi-tone combinations that make Yumas the crown jewel of the mushroom coral category. Unlike smooth-surfaced Discosoma or textured Rhodactis mushrooms, Yumas feature a distinctive bubble-covered disc surface with prominent raised vesicles that catch and refract light in ways no other mushroom coral does — creating a jewel-like, dimensional presence that reads dramatically from any angle.

What makes the Yuma Mushroom one of the most prized soft corals in the collector market is the combination of extraordinary color saturation, oversized disc presence, and genuine rarity of premium morphs. Yumas are considered premium collector-grade mushroom corals — the kind of specimen serious reef keepers specifically seek out to anchor a curated soft coral display or nano showpiece tank. Mature Yumas expand to 3 to 6 inches across, giving each specimen dramatic presence on the rockwork, and the vivid color expression under quality reef lighting is unmatched by any other mushroom coral in the trade. Yumas do require slightly more established conditions than standard Discosoma or Rhodactis mushrooms — they benefit from moderate reef lighting, gentle to moderate flow, and stable water parameters — but reward the patient reefer with one of the most photogenic and collectible soft corals available in the hobby.

Care Information

Lighting Moderate (PAR 100–200) — quality reef lighting preferred
Water Flow Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow preferred
Placement Mid to lower rockwork or sandbed
Care Level Moderate — established systems preferred
Temperament Peaceful — reef-safe, no sweeper tentacles
Feeding Photosynthetic — benefits from target feeding to accelerate growth

Special Considerations

Yuma Mushrooms prefer moderate reef lighting and stable, established water parameters — they are more demanding than standard Discosoma or Rhodactis mushrooms and are not recommended for brand-new or unstable reef systems. Provide moderate reef lighting in the PAR 100 to 200 range — too little light causes color loss and slow decline, while excessive lighting can cause bleaching. Provide gentle to moderate, indirect flow to allow full disc expansion; direct high-velocity flow will prevent the mushroom from opening fully. Yumas benefit significantly from occasional target feeding with mysis, small pieces of shrimp, or coral feeding preparations to accelerate growth and color development. Yumas can occasionally detach and drift to a new location if unhappy with placement conditions — this is normal behavior and the mushroom will typically settle in a new spot within days. Provide 2 to 3 inches of spacing from neighboring corals to accommodate the larger disc expansion. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels and gradual acclimation on arrival to ensure long-term color retention and slow, steady growth.
