About this item

Halimeda Cactus Macroalgae

Halimeda (Halimeda sp.) is a distinctive calcareous green macroalgae recognized for its stacked, coin-shaped segments and upright cactus-like growth form. Growing from a rooted base in sand or rubble, it develops branching clusters that create a natural reef-like appearance in aquascapes.

Unlike many fast-growing macroalgae, Halimeda forms calcified segments composed partly of calcium carbonate, giving it a rigid structure and making it biologically unique. Its firm, structured growth provides contrast against softer macroalgae while contributing to a natural reef aesthetic.

Special Considerations

Halimeda produces calcified segments that incorporate calcium carbonate into its structure. As a result, it consumes both calcium and alkalinity during growth. Maintaining stable calcium and alkalinity levels is important for continued healthy growth and branching.

🌱 Propagation

Halimeda spreads through fragmentation and basal growth:

  • Broken segments may establish in nearby substrate
  • Mature plants can produce new stalks from the base
  • Colonies expand naturally as they grow
