About this item

Tube Anemone

Note: This is a general description of the species — the specific specimen you receive may vary in color, size, and appearance.

The Tube Anemone (Cerianthus sp.) is one of the most fascinating and visually distinctive anemones available in the saltwater hobby. A crown of long, flowing tentacles radiates from a soft-bodied core, extending gracefully into the water column with colors that range across purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and white depending on the individual specimen — every Tube Anemone is unique, with its own distinct color combination and tentacle pattern that turns the substrate into a true living display. Unlike true reef anemones, Tube Anemones build and live within a self-secreted parchment-like tube in the sandbed, extending their tentacles outward and retracting completely when disturbed for one of the most dynamic displays in the entire anemone family.

Each Tube Anemone is a one-of-a-kind specimen selected from current availability. The exact coloration you receive is a surprise — some specimens display vivid solid colors, others show striking two-tone or gradient patterns. Tube Anemones fit beautifully into macroalgae-focused and low-light reef displays, where their long, flowing tentacles create dramatic movement against a natural backdrop. For reefers looking to add something genuinely different to a mature system, the Tube Anemone delivers a display experience unlike anything else in the hobby.

Care Information

💡 Lighting
Low to Moderate — tolerates most reef lighting conditions
🌊 Water Flow
Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow preferred
📍 Placement
Deep sandbed — requires 4"+ of sand to build tube
⚙️ Care Level
Moderate — requires target feeding for long-term success
🐠 Temperament
Aggressive — long stinging tentacles will catch small fish and invertebrates
🍽️ Feeding
Non-photosynthetic — target feed mysis, small seafood 2–3x per week

Special Considerations

Tube Anemones are non-photosynthetic and require regular target feeding of meaty foods 2 to 3 times per week to survive long-term — this is the single most important care requirement. Unlike photosynthetic anemones (BTAs, carpets, Haddoni), Tube Anemones cannot survive on light alone. Feed small pieces of mysis, silversides, or chopped seafood directly to the tentacles using a feeding stick or turkey baster. Provide a deep sandbed of at least 4 inches to allow the anemone to build and anchor its parchment tube — this is essential for long-term stability. Tube Anemones have long, potent stinging tentacles that will catch and consume small fish, shrimp, and invertebrates that come within reach; keep small livestock and delicate corals well away from placement location. Most Tube Anemones extend fully at night and retract partially during the day — this is natural behavior and not a sign of illness. Provide gentle, indirect flow and stable water parameters. Use gloves when working near the anemone — the sting can cause skin reactions in humans.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

The Tube Anemone is one of the most visually unique and rewarding sandbed animals available to reef keepers:

  • Unique tube-dwelling behavior and long flowing tentacles unlike any true reef anemone
  • Wide color range — every specimen is a one-of-a-kind display animal
  • An ideal centerpiece for macroalgae-focused, low-light, or sandbed-heavy systems where true reef anemones don't fit — a genuine alternative for reefers looking for something different

Livestock Disclaimer

Due to natural variation, the Tube Anemone you receive will be selected based on current availability and may range across the full spectrum of colors and patterns available in this species — including purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, white, and combinations. Specific color and pattern cannot be guaranteed and are determined at packing time.

Photographs are representative examples. Individual specimens may also vary in size, tentacle length, and tentacle density.

As with all live animals, proper acclimation and a suitable, established environment are essential for best results. Tube Anemones require a deep sandbed and regular target feeding — please ensure your system is fully ready before purchase.
