About this item

Phoenix Down Macroalgae

Phoenix Down Macroalgae (prov. Haliptlon spp) is one of the most visually striking and texturally rich red macroalgae available in the reef hobby. This rare species grows in a way that immediately commands attention — dense, finely divided feathery branches in a deep, saturated crimson red that layer and build into a full, rounded plume of living color. From across the room it reads as a lush, warm-toned softscape element. Up close, the intricate feathery branching reveals an extraordinary level of detail — fine fronds dividing repeatedly into softer and softer tips, the whole plant a living texture that no other macroalgae in the hobby can replicate.

In flow the Phoenix Down comes fully alive. The fine feathery branches respond to even gentle water movement, swaying and drifting with a fluid, almost hypnotic quality that flat-bladed and round-vesicle macroalgae simply cannot match. Under blue and actinic lighting the deep crimson intensifies — warm red glowing against cool blue water in a contrast that photographs beautifully and looks even better in person.

Sourced from Australian waters and rarely seen in the hobby, Phoenix Down is a genuine collector's specimen — one that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as something special, and that newcomers will simply not be able to stop looking at.

Care Information

💡 Lighting
Low to Moderate — deep red coloration maintained best away from intense direct light
🌊 Water Flow
Low to Moderate — gentle indirect flow brings out the best movement
📍 Placement
Rock-mounted — mid to lower display zones with open water around it
⚙️ Care Level
Moderate — stable parameters and consistent nutrients recommended
📈 Growth Rate
Moderate — steady and non-invasive
🧪 Nutrient Export
Moderate nitrate and phosphate uptake

Special Considerations

Phoenix Down performs best in stable, established systems with gentle indirect flow that allows the branching structure to sway freely. The fine branching structure is delicate — avoid strong direct flow which can stress or damage the branch tips over time. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins, large tangs, and puffers which will readily graze the fine fronds. Supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule to maintain rich crimson coloration. Handle gently during placement and acclimate slowly on arrival.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The fine feathery branching structure creates a soft, warm-toned textural presence that moves beautifully with gentle flow — a living element that brings constant subtle motion to your aquascape
  • Deep crimson red adds a bold warm contrast that green and purple macroalgae simply cannot replicate — one of the few truly red display macroalgae available in the hobby
  • A rare and visually distinctive collector's macroalgae that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as something special — and that no serious macro display should be without
