About this item

Phoenix Feather Macroalgae

Phoenix Feather Macroalgae (Plocamium sp.) is the most elegantly formed red macroalgae available in the reef hobby — a rare Australian specimen that grows into a lush, deeply feathered canopy of rich crimson fronds that branch and rebranch in every direction until the whole plant resembles the sweeping tail plumage of a mythical firebird. Up close each frond is flat, smooth, and delicately divided into fine pinnate branchlets that layer over each other in a dense, complex fan. Stepped back, the entire specimen forms a breathtaking crimson canopy that draws the eye from across the room.

In flow the Phoenix Feather truly earns its name — the feathered fronds catch the current and sway in a fluid, sweeping motion that is closer to a living plume than a plant. Every pulse of water animates the whole specimen simultaneously, creating a constant and mesmerizing display of crimson movement that no flat-bladed or branching macroalgae can replicate. Under blue and actinic lighting the deep burgundy-crimson intensifies and the layered fronds cast subtle shadows across each other — adding a depth and richness of color that rewards every viewing angle.

Sourced from Australian waters and almost impossible to find in the hobby, Phoenix Feather is a genuine collector's specimen. It exports nutrients quietly and efficiently while delivering a visual elegance that elevates any display or dedicated macroalgae system it inhabits.

Care Information

💡 Lighting
Low to Moderate — deep crimson coloration best maintained away from intense direct light
🌊 Water Flow
Low to Moderate — gentle indirect flow brings out the best movement
📍 Placement
Rock-mounted — mid to lower display zones with open water around it
⚙️ Care Level
Moderate — stable parameters and consistent nutrients recommended
📈 Growth Rate
Moderate — steady and non-invasive
🧪 Nutrient Export
Moderate nitrate and phosphate uptake

Special Considerations

Phoenix Feather performs best in stable, established systems with gentle indirect flow that allows the feathered fronds to sway freely without being battered. The delicate pinnate branchlets can be damaged by strong direct flow over time — position with care and allow the current to reach it gently from the side or below. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins, large tangs, and puffers which will readily graze the fine fronds. Supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule to maintain rich deep crimson coloration. Handle gently during placement — the feathered frond tips are delicate and can break under rough handling.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The deeply feathered, multi-order pinnate frond structure creates a living canopy unlike any other macroalgae available in the hobby — elegant, complex, and endlessly detailed
  • An exceptional copepod refuge — the layered feathered frond structure provides unmatched surface area and shelter for beneficial microfauna throughout the entire colony
  • A rare Australian collector's specimen that experienced reef keepers will immediately recognize as extraordinary — the most elegantly formed red macroalgae available anywhere in the hobby
