Pom Pom Anemone Crab

Symbiotic anemone behavior — the signature Pom Pom display: Pom Pom Crabs carry small live anemones (typically Bunodeopsis or Triactis producta species) in each of their front claws and use them for both defense and feeding — waving the stinging anemones at potential predators to deter attacks, and using them to capture food particles from the water column. This is one of the most extraordinary examples of symbiotic behavior in the entire marine hobby, and is the primary reason this species is so coveted by ornamental invertebrate collectors. The crab and anemone relationship is obligate for the crab — Pom Pom Crabs have specialized claws designed to hold anemones and will actively search for replacement anemones if they lose their pom poms.

Anemone loss during shipping and molting — completely normal: Pom Pom Crabs may occasionally lose one or both of their anemone pom poms during shipping stress, acclimation to a new system, or during natural molting cycles — this is completely normal behavior and not a sign of specimen health issues. Crabs that arrive without visible anemones will typically find replacement anemones in the tank (small aiptasia, tiny majano, or other small anemones can be adopted), or you can provide small transplanted anemones from an existing tank. Do not be alarmed if your Pom Pom Crab arrives without visible pom poms — the crab is still healthy and will resume the signature pom pom behavior once it acquires replacement anemones.

⚠️ TANKMATE COMPATIBILITY — CRITICAL: Pom Pom Crabs are very small (0.5-1 inch) and are vulnerable to predatory fish that will hunt, kill, or eat them. This species is NOT compatible with hawkfish, larger wrasses (particularly Six-Line Wrasse, Melanurus Wrasse, and other predatory wrasses), triggerfish, puffers, larger angelfish, groupers, lionfish, or any fish large enough to consume a small crab. Compatible with peaceful small community fish including small clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, small chromis, and other peaceful nano/reef community species. Best kept in dedicated invertebrate-focused nano displays or peaceful community reef tanks with no predatory fish.

Tank environment: Provide an established aquarium (10+ gallons minimum, nano reef displays ideal) with extensive live rock providing multiple small caves, crevices, and hiding places sized appropriately for the tiny crab. Fine sand substrate helpful but not required. Standard reef temperature (72-78°F) and salinity (1.023-1.026) with moderate water flow supports healthy long-term development. Pom Pom Crabs are exceptionally hardy and adaptable to standard reef conditions once appropriate tankmate selection is confirmed.

Feeding: Pom Pom Crabs are omnivore scavengers that will eat detritus, small food particles, and any small pieces of meaty foods they encounter. Feed 2-3 times per week with small pieces of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, or chopped fish — target-feed near the crab's location or place food where the crab can find it. The pom pom anemones also contribute to feeding by capturing food particles that the crab then transfers to its mouth. Pom Pom Crabs rarely require heavy feeding and thrive on natural detritus and periodic supplementation.

⚠️ COPPER TOXICITY WARNING: Like all marine invertebrates, Pom Pom Crabs are extremely sensitive to copper-based medications and copper contamination — even trace copper levels can be lethal. Do NOT add Pom Pom Crabs (or any invertebrate) to any aquarium that has ever been treated with copper-based medications, or that uses copper-containing plumbing components. Test water for copper levels before introduction if there is any question about tank history.

Molting: Like all crustaceans, Pom Pom Crabs periodically molt their exoskeleton as they grow — during molting they may hide for 1-3 days and temporarily set down their pom pom anemones. This is completely normal healthy behavior. Do NOT remove the discarded shell from the tank; the crab often consumes the shell to recover calcium for its new exoskeleton.

Specific size and marking pattern cannot be guaranteed and are determined at packing time. Pom Pom presence at arrival cannot be guaranteed — anemones are frequently lost during shipping stress and are naturally replaced by the crab once in the display tank.
