Red Chenille Macroalgae

Red Chenille Macroalgae (Dasya sp.) is one of the most texturally extraordinary and visually distinctive macroalgae you can keep in a saltwater system. Native to Australian waters and rarely seen in the hobby, this species grows in long, sinuous, rope-like strands densely coated from end to end in fine, velvety red filaments — giving it the appearance of deep crimson chenille yarn drifting and swaying in the current. There is genuinely nothing else in the reef hobby that looks like it.

The defining characteristic of this species is its unique texture. Unlike branching or blade-forming macroalgae, Red Chenille develops flexible, trailing stems with an almost braided quality, every inch covered in short, even, bristle-like branchlets that create a soft, plush, velvet-like surface. Under reef lighting the deep crimson color intensifies, and the movement of the filaments in flow adds a constant, living animation to the display.

Red Chenille performs best in stable, established systems with gentle, indirect flow. Strong direct flow can strip the fine filaments from the stems over time — position with care. Keep away from aggressive herbivores including urchins and large tangs that will graze on the delicate filaments. The velvety filaments can trap detritus in very low flow areas so ensure adequate gentle circulation around the specimen.
