Red Rosary Macroalgae

$34.99

Key Features:
⭐ Thin wiry crimson stems studded with precise bead-like nodes — looks like living rosary beads suspended in water, unlike any other macroalgae
• Actively exports nitrates and phosphates through steady photosynthetic uptake
• The nodal structure is a natural microfauna magnet — copepods and amphipods colonize the beaded nodes visibly over time
• Each stem catches light differently at the nodes than along the wire — a subtle shimmer that pulses with every shift in current

About this item

Red Rosary Macroalgae

Red Rosary Macroalgae (Rhodophyta sp.) grows in a way that stops people mid-sentence. Long, deep crimson stems rise upright from the substrate — thin and wiry, almost like red fishing line — but studded at precise, regular intervals with small bead-like node swellings that run the full length of every strand. The result looks less like a plant and more like a string of living rosary beads suspended in water. In flow each stem moves independently, crossing and separating with the current in a slow, hypnotic dance that no bushy, bladed, or branching macroalgae can produce.

Up close the structure reveals itself in full detail. Each node is a distinct, rounded swelling sitting precisely between two clean wiry stem segments — the same formation repeating identically from base to tip. Where light catches the nodes it reflects differently from the smooth wiry sections between them, creating a subtle but constant two-tone shimmer along every strand. The effect is unlike anything else in the display tank — architectural and minimal in a way that most reef aquascapes have never seen.

Slow growing and non-invasive, Red Rosary holds its wire-and-bead structure permanently without pruning or intervention. It does not spread aggressively, does not compete with corals for space, and contributes to the system through steady nutrient uptake and excellent surface area for copepods and microfauna to colonize throughout its nodal structure.

Available Options

Full Starter Plant

  • A full starter specimen of Red Rosary Macroalgae with established nodal stem structure
  • Ready to place directly into display or refugium — the wire-and-bead form is visible from day one
  • Sourced from Australian waters — grows slowly into an increasingly striking upright colony over time

Care Information

💡 Lighting
Low to Moderate — deep red coloration holds well across a range of spectrums
🌊 Water Flow
Low to Moderate — gentle flow animates the individual stems beautifully
📍 Placement
Rock-mounted — upright growth makes it ideal as a mid-display focal point
⚙️ Care Level
Moderate — stable parameters and consistent lighting recommended
📈 Growth Rate
Slow — adds new nodal stem length gradually over time
🧪 Nutrient Export
Steady nitrate and phosphate uptake through photosynthesis

Special Considerations

The individual stems of Red Rosary are delicate — the wiry structure is strong in flow but vulnerable to physical contact from fish that pick at rockwork or invertebrates that graze across surfaces. Keep away from urchins and aggressive herbivores that will graze the nodal structure. Supplement with iron and iodine as part of a regular micronutrient dosing schedule to maintain the deep crimson coloration throughout the stems. Handle gently during placement — anchor the base to rock with minimal contact to the stem structure itself.

🔍 Aquarium Insights

  • The nodal bead structure creates exceptional surface area for copepods and amphipods — a dense population of microfauna will establish throughout the stem colony over time, visibly clustering around the nodes
  • The upright, minimalist growth habit pairs exceptionally well with dense, textured macroalgae — Red Rosary provides negative space and architectural contrast that makes neighboring specimens look better
  • The wire-and-bead stem structure is the defining characteristic — it grows identically from base to tip, creates its own kind of visual rhythm in the tank, and looks like nothing else on the market

Due to natural variation, the specimen you receive may vary in stem length, node spacing, and overall density. Photographs are representative examples.

Individual specimens may display differences in coloration and stem count depending on lighting and tank conditions.

As with all live animals, proper acclimation and a stable, established environment are essential for best results.
