About this item

Hammer Coral

Note: This is a general description of the species — the specific specimen you receive may vary in color, size, and appearance.

The Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora / Euphyllia parancora) is one of the most iconic, beginner-friendly, and endlessly popular LPS corals in the entire saltwater hobby. Long, fleshy tentacles sweep gently through the water, each tipped with the distinctive T-shaped or hammer-shaped tip that gives this coral its name — the sweeping, living movement of a healthy Hammer transforms any reef display into a dynamic, breathing scene. Hammers come in an extraordinary range of colors, from vivid green and gold to purple, orange, pink, and striking two-tone combinations, with every specimen bringing its own unique color signature.

What makes the Hammer Coral so beloved is the combination of visual impact, growth potential, and beginner-friendly care. Hammer Corals and Frogspawn Corals are one of the most compatible coral pairings in the hobby — the two species can be placed directly alongside each other without stinging conflict, making the Hammer-and-Frogspawn combination the classic foundation of any Euphyllia garden display. Torches are more variable and can occasionally sting adjacent Hammers even within the same broader coral family, so provide 3-6 inches of spacing when combining Torches with Hammers (see Special Considerations). Hardy, adaptable, and forgiving of typical reef parameters, the Hammer Coral is one of the best all-around LPS corals for new and experienced reefers alike.

Available Options

Full Starter Plant

One Hammer Coral head or frag — exact color selected from current availability. Distinctive T-shaped tentacle tips with full polyp extension. Ideal for building a Euphyllia garden display alongside Torches and Frogspawn. Will grow steadily under stable conditions, producing additional heads over time.

Care Information

Lighting Low to Moderate (PAR 50–150)
Water Flow Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow preferred
Placement Mid to lower rockwork or sandbed
Care Level Easy — beginner-friendly LPS
Temperament Semi-aggressive — long sweeper tentacles at night, compatible with Frogspawn Corals
Feeding Photosynthetic — benefits from meaty foods 1–2x per week

Special Considerations

Hammer Corals extend long sweeper tentacles at night that can sting neighboring non-Euphyllia corals. Provide adequate spacing — at least 4–5 inches from non-Euphyllia corals in all directions. Hammers can be placed directly alongside with Frogspawn without stinging conflict, making them ideal for building a full Euphyllia garden. Avoid direct, high-velocity flow which can stress the tissue and prevent full polyp extension. Feed with mysis, small pieces of shrimp, or coral feeding preparations 1–2 times per week to support growth and color saturation. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels, and avoid sudden changes in flow, lighting, or chemistry. Brown jelly disease is an occasional risk in the Euphyllia family; handle tissue carefully and maintain excellent water quality at all times.
