About this item

Scooter Blenny

The Scooter Blenny (Synchiropus ocellatus) is one of the most endlessly watchable, distinctively behaved, and biologically fascinating small reef fish available in the entire saltwater hobby. A cryptic mottled body in shades of brown, tan, and cream is punctuated by distinctive dark ocellated eyespot patterns along the body — with males displaying a dramatically enlarged, sail-like first dorsal fin marked with warm orange and red highlights used for courtship and dominance displays — creating one of the most character-rich small-fish silhouettes in the entire reef trade. Despite the common name "Scooter Blenny," this species is actually a member of the dragonet family (same as the more familiar Mandarin), and its distinctive scooting-and-perching behavior across the substrate makes it one of the most personality-driven small reef fish available.

What makes the Scooter Blenny one of the most rewarding intermediate-level reef fish is the combination of unique behavior, dramatic male dorsal fin displays, and cryptic camouflaged coloration that rewards close observation. Scooter Blennies spend their days deliberately scooting across the substrate and rockwork, methodically picking at tiny copepods and amphipods with a slow, contemplative feeding style completely unlike any active swimming fish — every specimen becomes a genuine individual with favored feeding spots and observable personality quirks. Completely reef-safe and peaceful with tankmates, the Scooter Blenny requires an established reef system with a healthy pod population, though many specimens will train to accept prepared foods over time. For reef keepers with mature systems looking for a specialist fish with genuine personality and dynamic bottom-feeding behavior, the Scooter Blenny delivers one of the most rewarding small reef fish available in the hobby.

Special Considerations

The Scooter Blenny is a specialist pod-feeding dragonet and requires an established, mature reef aquarium (ideally 6+ months old) with a healthy copepod and amphipod population. Without an active live food source, Scooter Blennies can slowly starve regardless of care attempts. A connected refugium with macroalgae is strongly recommended to maintain a continuous supply of live copepods. Unlike the closely related Red Ruby Dragonet, many Scooter Blennies can be trained to accept prepared foods including live baby brine shrimp, frozen cyclops, and finely ground mysis — though success varies by individual specimen and buyers should plan around continuous live food availability just in case. Only one male Scooter Blenny may be kept per tank; males will fight each other and display aggressively with their sail-like dorsal fins. Male-female pairs or one male with 2-3 females can be kept together if introduced simultaneously. Scooter Blennies are peaceful with tankmates but should not be housed with aggressive fish or with pod-competing species (wrasses, anthias, gobies) unless the tank is 55 gallons or larger with abundant live rock. Completely reef-safe with corals and invertebrates. Adult size approximately 2.5 to 3 inches.
