Pistol shrimp symbiotic partnership — the signature natural display: Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies form one of the most captivating natural symbiotic partnerships in the entire marine hobby with pistol shrimp of the Alpheus genus. In this mutualistic relationship, the nearly-blind pistol shrimp constantly maintains and expands the shared burrow, while the sharp-eyed goby stands sentinel duty at the burrow entrance and alerts the shrimp to approaching threats through subtle body movements — with the shrimp maintaining nearly constant tactile contact with the goby's tail via its antennae. The primary natural pistol shrimp partner is the Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus), though the Randall's/Candy Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli) also readily pairs with Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies in home aquaria. For optimal partnership success, purchase the goby and shrimp together and introduce them to the display tank at the same time — separate introductions can result in the pair failing to find each other in the aquarium.

Species disambiguation — NOT to be confused with similar-named gobies: The Yellow Nose Prawn Goby (Stonogobiops xanthorhinica) is frequently confused in the trade with two other similar-named gobies that are entirely different species. It is NOT the same as: (1) the Black-Ray Goby / Hi-Fin Red-Banded Goby / Filament-Finned Prawn Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes) — which has a distinctive elongated dorsal fin ray that the Yellow Nose lacks, and features red-banded rather than dark-banded body coloration; or (2) the Yellow Prawn Goby / Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus) — which is an entirely yellow-colored goby from a completely different genus. The Yellow Nose Prawn Goby is distinguished by its pearly-white body, four diagonal dark bands, and the signature bright yellow forehead marking that gives the species its name.

⚠️ JUMPING RISK — TIGHT-FITTING LID REQUIRED: Like all Stonogobiops gobies, Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies are accomplished jumpers and will leap from open-top aquariums, particularly when startled or stressed during acclimation. A tight-fitting lid, mesh top, or covered aquarium is REQUIRED for this species — this is one of the most common causes of specimen loss in home aquariums for all Stonogobiops species. Even small gaps in aquarium covers should be addressed; the slender goby body can slip through surprisingly small openings during a jump.

Shy temperament and tankmate selection: Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies are shy and docile by nature and are easily intimidated by aggressive or overly-active tankmates that will keep the goby hidden in the burrow and prevent natural sentinel behavior display. Compatible with peaceful small community fish including small clownfish, other peaceful gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, small chromis, firefish, and other peaceful nano/reef community species. NOT compatible with aggressive damsels, larger predatory wrasses, triggerfish, puffers, groupers, or hawkfish that may hunt or intimidate the small goby. Best kept in dedicated peaceful nano displays or peaceful community reef tanks. Interestingly, Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies are NOT aggressive toward other shrimp goby species and may even share a burrow with another compatible shrimp goby in appropriately-sized tanks.

Tank environment: Provide an established aquarium (15+ gallons minimum, nano reef displays ideal) with a fine sand substrate of at least 1-2 inches depth for the essential burrowing behavior, live rock providing multiple hiding places and burrow site options, and moderate water flow. Standard reef temperature (72-78°F) and salinity (1.023-1.025) with stable parameters support healthy long-term development. During initial acclimation, the goby will likely be extremely shy — providing a PVC pipe or artificial burrow directed toward the intended burrow location helps the goby settle into a chosen territory more quickly.

Feeding: Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies are carnivores that accept a wide range of frozen and prepared marine foods including frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, chopped seafood, quality marine pellets, and freeze-dried preparations. Feed 1-2 times per day with variety — target-feed near the goby's burrow location if the fish is shy and won't compete for food at the surface. When paired with a pistol shrimp, the goby will often share food with the shrimp through a natural food-transfer behavior. Once acclimated and paired, Yellow Nose Prawn Gobies become bold feeders and readily accept most prepared marine foods.
